His Dream Of Lions — just wow. I’m hooked! This gem of a pop/punk band from Fairfax, VA is doing all the right things!
Currently working two EP’s, (Part One and Part Two) the band recently released their music video to the track “Elsa” and the opening track “Novel” reached #7 on the NMW Top 40 Chart, and #7 on the NMW Hot 100 Singles Chart.! (Not surprised)
This band has a lot going on for them and I would be surprised not to see them touring with the big’s sometime VERY soon!
Anchor Music News talked with HDOL to figure out where the band is going, what they’re up to, whats behind the album and more:
AMN: What is the weirdest fact about one of you?
HDOL: “Seth was born in Hong Kong!”
AMN: What’s been your favorite concert so far? Your least favorite?
HDOL: “Favorite would have to be the show we played at the Fillmore in Maryland with Aaron Carter.
And without getting too specific, our least favorite would have to be the time we played in the back of a music store for a radio broadcast show that was never aired.”
AMN: How did the band form and what’s behind the name “His Dream of Lions”?
HDOL: “Our guitar player Nick assembled the best players he knew at the time. I think we were all just looking for a fun project to work on, but things quickly took off. The name draws its inspiration from the Ernest Hemingway novel The Old Man and The Sea. In the story the old man is constantly having dreams of lions on the beach. The lions are meant to represent a sense of adventure the old man once had, or is still trying to cling onto. By taking on the name His Dream of Lions, we are reminded of the fact that life is about the experience. Events that are difficult to contend with usually leave us with something more than what we had.”
AMN: What do you feel you bring to the pop/punk scene?
HDOL: “While our music definitely has its roots in pop/punk, I think there are elements to our sound that set us apart. The lyrics in our songs are very confessional and eloquent, where as the music is punchy and triumphant. When you combine those two components you end up with something that is not quite what you would expect out of your average pop punk band.”
AMN: What’s something the band avidly believes in?
HDOL: “Hard work. As corny as it sounds, anything is attainable if you’re willing to try for it.”
AMN: The Elsa Music Video ROCKS! Where was it filmed and how did you find that location?
HDOL: “The Elsa video was done with a super talented director named Orie McGinness whom we met through DJQ Artist Management. Orie told us about a burned down paper mill in Richmond Virginia so we ended up doing the video there. We were on the upper level of the mill, about 100 feet off the ground, and standing on a wooden floor that had been significantly weakened in the fire. It’s a wonder that we didn’t fall through!”
AMN: Why did you choose to cover National Anthem?
HDOL: “At the time we knew we needed some kind of cool cover video out there to help us build up into the release of our EPs. Seth was driving home from school one day listening to National Anthem and it hit him how great that song would work if you did a rock cover of it.”
HDOL: “Back in the summer of 2013 we recorded a full 11 song album. We eventually decided was that it would a better idea to get as much out of this release as we could and split record into two parts. The EPs are two halves of a whole, hence the names.”
AMN: What’s the overall theme of the albums?
HDOL: “The two records are very lush while still bringing it home as rock music. We wanted to make something that would kick the listeners ass, but in a beautiful way.”
AMN: What do you have coming up in the near-future?
HDOL: “Releasing this second EP and hopefully some touring!”
AMN: When the hell are you coming to Texas?
