I was drawn to HYMNAL based upon their sound. I love that there aren’t any bands to compare them with. “COOL” is a catchy song that will be stuck in your head.
Rob: Who is HYMNAL?
HYMNAL: We’re an indie rock band from the Northeast US. We’re a relatively new band, but the three of us have been playing in groups with one another for years.
Rob:Where did your name come from?
HYMNAL: The word has this sort of old world quality to it that we were drawn to. A hymnal is a songbook, a compilation of tunes that are different yet come together as one collection. We thought that was appropriate for what we’re trying to do: create a collection of music that defines us.
Rob: What is your song “COOL” about?
HYMNAL: COOL is a bit tongue in cheek; it’s about that sort of endless pursuit of relevancy that our culture embodies. Whether or not everyone readily admits it, we all want to have that x-factor of confidence and coolness; especially now, in our internet culture, people are constantly holding themselves to the standards of others, so that pursuit has become even more intensified.
Rob: How did you come up with your unique sound?
HYMNAL: Finding our sound has been a mixture of trial and error. While we have really strong influences and sounds that inspire us, a large part of this band was seeing what worked. We built our own home studio and just started experimenting and creating, and we eventually came up with this, a sort of amalgamation of rock, R&B, and electronic music.
Rob: What are your musical influences?
HYMNAL: This question is always difficult to answer; alternative R&B artists such as Frank Ocean, FKA Twigs, Gallant; rockier bands like Tame Impala, Mutemath, St. Vincent. Especially the classic rhythm and blues acts, though, like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson.
Rob: How is the NYC music scene?
HYMNAL: There’s a reason so many incredible acts have come from the city, it can’t be overstated how integral it is for the state of modern music. We’re honored to get our start here.
Rob: What is your favorite music venue to play in NYC?
HYMNAL: Every venue has its own charm, but there’s a really soft spot in our heart’s for Arlene’s Grocery. That was the first venue we’d ever played in Manhattan, and it’s sort of difficult to top that sort of experience.
Rob: What are your plans for 2016?
HYMNAL: An absolute ton, seeing as this is our first year. We have a couple of EPs coming out this spring, a slew of shows in the tri-state area, and a lot more. Keep up with us; this is going to be a big year.
